Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard physical horror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that come with most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
