The English along with Wales Placed in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool together, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, they claimed a convincing victory, with their opponents unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks until the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks top their own group.

Knockout Implications

If the pools conclude according to the current global standings, further top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both the English and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on that side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
