EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
